Family has always been central to Oshawa-based PR Engineering Limited. Like many successful businesses, PR Engineering began at a kitchen table. The year was 1965 and the table belonged to the company founder Paul Grieco, a second-generation Italian and his wife, Rose - thus the name of PR Engineering. Paul had acquired the rights to the Birdsboro Buchanan rock crusher and was subcontracting out the manufacturing. Sons Frank and Joe joined the business in the early 1970's and before long, they saw the opportunity to add the remanufacturing of rock crushers to their growing capabilities. To accommodate this, PR Engineering located to a 45,000 square foot facility in Oshawa in the late 1970's and the company remains in that location to this day.
The number of employees grew as well, increasing to today's high of 45, as customers lined up to get their rock crushers built or repaired. Everything was going smoothly until a tragic plane accident took the lives of the two brothers in May 2007. After experiencing engine trouble, the brothers along with the pilot were killed when the plane overshot the runway on landing.
Although the industry held its breath, wanting to see whether a sale was in the works, no one was surprised when Frank's wife, Linda Grieco, stepped up to the plate to take over the family reigns.
Despite the tragic loss of Grieco brothers, PR Engineering has continued to remain steadfast to its reputation as an industry leading supplier and fabricator of large rock crushers. Under the leadership of Linda Grieco, PR Engineering has not only continued to operate, it has flourished. So much so, that we were awarded the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce 2008 Business Excellence Award.
Today, PR Engineering designs and manufactures the Birdsboro Buchanan line of heavy-duty double toggle primary jaw crushers as well as specializing in the design, manufacture, component repair and parts supply for large equipment aggregate and other heavy industries. In addition, the company is the authorized repair centre for the mining giant Metso Minerals and has a working affiliation with FLSMidth Minerals.
Our reputation has been built upon our specialization in crushers, coupled with our ability to handle everything from minor to catastrophic failures quickly and efficiently.
Although crushing technology hasn't changed much in the last 100 years or so, the ability to repair those crushers and minimize downtime has. PR Engineering has become an expert at this, outfitting its equipment over the years with all of the latest CNC machine tools, welding and CAD/ CAM technology to handle the work.
Our ability to minimize customer downtime and limit production losses makes us attractive to customers all over the world.
Today, PR Engineering is outfitted with a variety of equipment to service the large crushers and other industrial machines it services. These tools include three large horizontal boring mills (capable of handling pieces measuring 12 feet vertically and 22 feet horizontally), a large planer mill and a large lathe. These machines are busy 20 hours per day, 6 days a week but this production doesn't compare to our large Vertical Boring Mill, which is our most highly sought after commodity. The ability to turn large diameters up to 209 inches x 14 feet high makes ours one of the largest vertical boring mills in North America. Because of this machine's capabilities and a high demand for this service.
At the heart of all this machinery is a highly skilled, non-unionized staff of dedicated employees. Although these people are generally skilled when they come to the company, PR Engineering puts them through additional in-house training. What makes them extremely important to the daily running of the operation is the employees' cross training and flexibility to work more than one machine. This flexibility enables the plant to put as many people as required on the critical emergency jobs.
